Simple Ways to Tackle Condensation and Damp in the Bathroom

Bathroom

One of the most troubled areas of the house for damp and condensation, the bathroom sees its fair share of moisture. From showers and brushing teeth or a hot bath and washing hands, running water and steam is constant when a bathroom is in use, but if not maintained it could cause mean a build-up of condensation and, in turn, create damp spots.

There are many reasons for damp too, whether it’s more a structural problem coming from outside in or something as simple as a small plumbing leak. Whatever the reason, you’ll want to ensure your bathroom is equipped to deal with it. Here are some simple and cost-effective ways to tackle condensation and damp in your bathroom.

Ventilation and heating

Improving your ventilation is an important part of preventing condensation. Circulate air through your bathroom by leaving your windows and doors open, and encourage cross-ventilation by opening multiple windows. This is especially a good idea if you’ve just had a shower or hot bath, meaning the steam can ventilate rather than cling to one place and start to form condensation. Consider investing in an extractor fan or radiator for your bathroom to speed up the process.

Bathroom windows

A key culprit in attracting damp and condensation, windows are usually the coldest part of the house, so always make sure you wipe down your bathroom window sills every morning. If you have single glazed windows in your bathroom, it’s probably time to upgrade to double glazing at least, as it keeps the rooms at a warmer temperature, meaning that it won’t be cold enough for condensation to settle.

Choose moisture resistant paint and wallpaper

If you’re looking to give your bathroom an aesthetic lift whilst also combating damp and condensation, why not research moisture resistant materials? With a variety of different damp-proof paints and wallpapers to suit any style and budget, there are useful options for your bathroom. Whilst you shouldn’t rely on just these alone, these can act as an extra line defence to dealing with damp.

Keep an eye on your plumbing

By keeping an eye on your plumbing, you can prevent a leak before it happens. Leaks are most likely to start from the bathroom, so check your taps, pipes and and catch the leak before it develops into something worse.
