Three Tips For Preparing For a Kitchen Installation

Renovating your kitchen is an exciting project. Whether you’re going for a brand new look or you want to add some extra space, a kitchen renovation can completely transform your home, enabling you to achieve your dream kitchen without upping sticks and moving house.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that a new kitchen installation also requires careful planning and preparation - and it’s crucial that you know what to expect and how to survive without your kitchen for a while.

To help you prepare for your kitchen installation, our experts have put together three top tips.

Clear out your kitchen beforehand

It’s important that the contractors can get to work on your home as soon as they arrive, which means that your kitchen needs to be cleared and ready. The first thing you should do in preparation is physically clear the space, removing everything from the cupboards, shelves and countertops. It’s also a good idea to move any furniture to keep it safe and protected. Don’t forget to remove any mirrors, pictures or art from the adjoining rooms too.

A kitchen renovation is the perfect opportunity to have a good clear out and get rid of anything you no longer need or want. Whether you’ve got a drawer full of old recipe books that you haven’t opened in years or a cupboard full of old tins of food that you don’t think you’ll ever get round to eating, now is the perfect time to get rid. Remember to donate any unused food to a food bank and any usable items to charity.

Prepare for dust

There is simply no escaping the fact that a kitchen renovation will produce a lot of dust and, unless you prepare your home properly for it, there’s a good chance it will end up coating everything in your home. The kitchen area needs to be closed off with plastic sheets to ensure all of the dust is contained; there’s a good chance your contractor will do this for you. Plastic should be put down where the builders will be walking in your home and at the entrance to the kitchen.

Set up a temporary kitchen

You’re likely going to be without a kitchen for a short period of time (or longer, depending on the size of the renovation) and therefore it’s important that you have a plan in place. Ordering a takeaway every night is going to get very expensive and you’ll likely want a hot cup of coffee first thing in the morning, so make sure you’ve got a temporary kitchen in place. Of course, you won’t have access to everything you’d normally have in a kitchen, but it’s worth dedicating a small area of your home to a temporary kitchen.

When packing up your kitchen, keep the microwave, kettle, toaster and slow cooker (if you have one) out. These are great for heating up and creating easy meals and getting your morning coffee fix while you can’t access your kitchen!
