If you have a small kitchen, you can still use it to whip up delicious meals. All you need is a few tips and tricks from the experts along with some clever design ideas to help you make the most of your small space.
Smaller kitchens can easily feel more cluttered and cramped due to the lack of space. However, with our top tips below, you can easily expand your space and make the most of your small kitchen.
Invest in flexible storage solutions
If you’ve got a small kitchen, you’ll need to get creative with storage. There are plenty of flexible storage solutions available to help you free up counter space without cramming your cupboards full. Below are just a few of our favourite space-saving storage solutions:
● Turn one shelf into two by installing additional shelves into your cupboards, allowing you to fit more items in
● Add an extra shelf above your cupboards to allow you to store even more items
● Use a bathroom rod to hang pots and pans anywhere you have some extra space in the kitchen - for example, above your stovetop
● Use a magnetic strip to store knives and other metallic utensils
● Use the inside of your cupboard doors! You can install hooks or mini racks to store measuring cups, pans, spices and more
Keep the colour scheme light
If there are too many colours, textures and patterns in one small space, it can end up looking chaotic and overwhelming. If you’ve got a small kitchen, it’s best to stick to just one or two colours when it comes to decorating. White reflects light and therefore creates the illusion of a bigger space - but don’t feel like you have to just stick to white.
Use different shades of the same colour to mix and match your kitchen; this will help to create some visual texture and make the room look more interesting. On the other hand, an all-white kitchen creates a seamless space with no boundaries.
In short: avoid too many colours and patterns and stick to lighter shades to brighten up the space.
Choose and place appliances carefully
In a small kitchen, appliances should be strategically placed to make the most of the space. Generally, it is advised that the sink, oven and fridge should all be located in working distance from each other. Choose modern, minimally-styled appliances to reduce visual distractions and ensure they fit in seamlessly without sticking out.
There are plenty of options today to save counter space and build appliances into your kitchen. For example, you can install a built-in microwave into the cabinetry or a boiling water tap instead of a kettle.
